Bike Like Mike 2013Bike Like Mike is back for a 2nd year and we're excited to ride from Milwaukee to Madison this year! We enjoyed our ride last year from Madison to St. Louis and are so thankful for those that participated. But this year we wanted to come back for some more and have more people join.
The plan is to leave from Columbia St. Mary's in Milwaukee on June 15th and arrive in Madison the same day at St. Mary's on Park St. Where we started our ride last summer. We'll have more information in the next couple of weeks. We're hoping to take the Glacial Drumlin state trail and bike til our hearts content. This is our second ride and if ya don't wanna Bike Like Mike, be sure to follow us! http://apdaparkinson.donordrive.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=donordrive.personalCampaign&participantID=8951 *Note this is a past donation page. Go to the homepage for the latest donation drive link! A message from Mike Malchow on the ride: We are already gearing up for this year’s edition of Bike Like Mike to be held on Saturday, June the 28th in Milwaukee and featuring rides of differing lengths along Milwaukee County bike trails. Bike riders will be led for the third year of Bike Like Mike by Donald Malchow, who biked to St. Louis the first year followed by last year’s ride from Milwaukee to Madison. All monies raised go to the Wisconsin chapter of APDA in Madison. The all-day event is open to anyone willing to participate so start lining up sponsors along with readying yourself for a fun day in the fresh air. |
THE FIRST BIKE LIKE MIKE...
501 miles - Completed! May 30th, 2012
The plan is to bike approximately 478 miles from the Dairy State to St. Louis, Missouri. From the Capitol in my home state, to a place where I feel comfortable being able to reach with my friends. I plan to leave after I graduate and depart on father's birthday on May 23rd. I had plans to bike to Texas, but I decided to shorten up the bike trip a bit, to make a more reachable goal for my first ever bike tour.
This journey will not be a smooth one. My father's perseverance gives me hope and strength to make it from Madison's capitol to St. Louis. I feel honored to just be attempting this ride that many are not able to do because they don't want do, they don't have the funds, or they are not physically or mentally able. |

Day 1: Madison, WI to Dodgeville, WIThe first day was a blast. The video to the right shows my good friend and roommate Beau Dobson speaking about his feelings on the trip and my father. I was blown away by the the amount of people that showed up. Nerves were riding high, but with a group of 10 bikers we slowly set out from St. Mary's Hospital. Where there is a will there is a way. The event at St. Mary's was extremely well run by the APDA chapter of Wisconsin. We were able to have a good group of friends (old and new) that came out to show there support. After a couple rounds of hugs and kisses, and a little send off speech. We finally got everyone hitched up and set off at around 1 pm. We made our way out of Madison with a group of dedicated bikers, at varying levels. Shout-out to Matt Anderson for )carrying a six person tent on a trailer (we've since abandoned the trailer on the side of the second day.) One of my favorite moments came toward the end of the 50 mile ride while climbing the last few hills in Governor Dodge State Park, my good friend Maria screamed, "I am doing this for MIKE!!!" I was elated at that moment. I was blown away by the people that decided to come on the trip. I was overwhelmed by the support. We made it safely to the campsite, had a wonderful meal prepared. The raccoons were the boldest that we had ever met and were willing to ravage through all our bags in search for food. We woke up the next morning ready for some more biking. Not ready for the wind or the storm that we heard was coming. Shelbi (another one of the bikers who has a grandfather with Parkinson) made us see the waterfall in Governor Dodge before we left. I was extremely glad she did. It was absolutely amazing! We also saw a baby raccoon, which eased the anger at their parents for looking through some of our bags.
